Whole Body Vibration Training Plates
- Do They Really Work?

Whole Body Vibration (WBV) Training, or WBV for short, is a relatively new type of exercise machine. If you've heard anyone talk about them, or read the adverts, you may be forgiven for thinking all the hype surrounding them is just that.

I did, that is, until I saw some of the results in my clients using them.

The claim that just ten minutes on one of these odd looking machines is the same one hours vigorous exercise, sounds just too good to be true.

But when you understand the science behind it all, it's easier to accept.

But before we look into the science under the plate, what about the benefits? It's quite a long list.

Whole Body Vibration Benefits

Before starting any new training program, you should consult with yor doctor, and more so with vibration training. If you are pregnant, have a heart defect or have a pacemaker fitted (or other medical implant), suffer from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or have a neurological condition, the vibration could cause complications. There are more, so please seek medical advice first.

I'll stop there, but I'm sure there's more.

Anecdotally, there are plenty of people happy to endorse the benefits of whole body vibration training, but what about the research and science?

The Science of Whole Body Vibration

The theory behind WBV is that by exercising on a vibrating plate, your muscles respond to maintain stability. This involves reflex activity causing the muscles to contract and release many times faster than in conventional exercise and activity. This explains why ten minutes can be equal to one hours exercise.

vibration plate exercises A growing number of sports teams are using vibration plates to train and rehabilitate players. More recently, a number of medical bodies have research the effects of WBV on certain conditions, including Multiple Sclerosis - see The Effects of Vibration Training in MS - and both balance and bone disorders.

The conclusion in all cases is positive, showing the training improved muscle strength, stability, balance and also saw benefits in general well-being.

WBV still has its skeptics, but the number of gymnasiums, sports clubs and individuals using these machines shows they're convinced of the benefits.

It's also interesting to note that many physical therapists, sports therapists, chiropractors and medical practitioners are installing these machines in there clinics.

Vibration Plate Exercises

Vibration plates range hugely in price. You can get budget models for around $250 and pay anything up to $10,000 for a professional machine. However, many users buy the machines and then fail to get the full benefit by using a limited number of positions on the trainer.
