Here is just one stretch from my posture program, details coming up, that can be very effective for stretching out and releasing the muscles in your lower back.
A Simple Stretch For Lower Back Pain
I see people with lower back pain everyday in my role as a teacher of The Alexander Technique. There may be many causes but the most common from my experience is poor posture which leads to excessive tension in this area.
Obviously the best approach for your condition is to tackle the cause and improve your posture and eliminate the pain altogether. In the short term you could try this very effective stretch for lower back pain to get some relief. All you need is a chair!
1. Stand opposite a chair and go into a squat and let your arms just hang in front of you.
Slowly lower your position to allow your hands to make contact with the seat of the chair.
2. Be aware of the push coming back from the chair and floor then allow yourself to rock slowly forward over the chair with the least amount of effort.
3. As your weight passes more into the chair through your arms allow the muscles in the upper back to respond appropriately – do not attempt to do anything yourself. Think of releasing your shoulders so they can widen and let your weight pass into the chair but also be aware of the push coming back.
4. Now let yourself rock slowly back moving from the ankles and wrists only. Imagine the floor is tilting backwards and allow your body to move, again without any sense of putting in effort. Notice the change in the push coming back from your feet and the reduction from the chair. Again allow your back muscles to make the appropriate adjustments.
5. Repeat the gentle rocking motion for a few minutes and see how much movement you can achieve without feeling you have done it yourself.
This simple stretch can help to release the tension you unknowingly hold in your lower back. For a long term solution you may like to consider trying my program below.
