Correct Your Sitting Posture With This Easy To Follow Program And Say Goodbye To Those Aches And Pains

And you won't be asked to sit up straight!
sitting posture

Sitting posture is an important factor in both your health and performance in the workplace. Why? If you consider you spend probably half your life sitting at your desk and PC, how you sit has a huge impact on your muscles, digestive system, circulation, breathing and even your bones. Sit poorly and your posture will change in a relatively short space of time as muscle imbalances develop.

Once the aches and pains begin, your sitting posture may have wider implications. It can be hard to concentration, get motivated and creative when distracted by aching muscles. When you don't feel at your best you don't perform at your best and your work may start to suffer along with your back. Once your posture begins to deteriorate it becomes a catch-22 situation as a poor chair posture leads to more and more inappropriate muscle activity just to keep you upright. A tug of war ensues as parts of you collapse and muscles struggle to maintain position.

You may try to correct your posture by attempting to sit up straight but this either becomes very uncomfortable or you forget to do it and before long you end up back in a slump. But even the conventional idea of sitting up straight is not good for you.

So What's The Problem?

sitting at a computer Hi, I'm Roy Palmer and I have been teaching people like you for the last ten years on how to use their body better. I do this using the remarkable system known as The Alexander Technique. If you are experiencing aches and pains whilst at your desk The Alexander Technique will help to make a significant improvement.

Sitting for long periods in front of a computer can be hard work but most adults make it harder than it needs to be due to poor habits relating to sitting posture. Until you can appreciate what these habits are, you will continue to experience discomfort regardless of what exercise you take or the chair you sit on.

I have put together this program based on my experience of working with people sitting at computers and desks. I have found a number of common habits, that once corrected, can make office life so much easier.

Which One Are You?

Take a look at the photographs below and see which resembles your position. Ask a colleague to take a look at your sitting posture, or better still take a photograph, without you changing how you would normally sit at your PC.

What Do You Look Like?

If you fall into the majority of the first two categories below, the forced or the slump, then in the long term your posture and health will suffer. Years of sitting in these positions will change the shape of your spine and therefore your overall posture.

Not only does it look bad, it will also eventually lead to aches and pains, digestion problems, poor circulation and in some cases breathing difficulties.

You will need to change this now to reverse the steady decline before it becomes too late to change anything.

Both the forced upright and the slumping positions will

  • Prevent good breathing
  • Cause stiff neck and shoulders
  • Impede digestion
  • Result in general aches and pains
  • Affect circulation
  • Cause lower back pain
  • Lead to poor posture
The poised/ relaxed sitting posture is by far the best for your body as it requires the least amount of effort on your behalf. Your body will quite happily balance itself - if you let it! Too many of us will switch from the slump to the forced. If you find yourself slumped what is your reaction? You will probably try to sit up straight by tightening your lower back into the forced sitting position in an attempt to correct your 'wrong' posture.

How long can you keep the forced upright before you either get tired of holding it or you forget to keep doing it? Both the slump and the forced sitting positions are going to cause you problems and should be avoided.

Few people can achieve the perfect poised position by themselves even when they know what it should look like!. This is because the bad habits they have developed are too powerful to overcome by just trying harder.
