Peak Performance and The Zone
Peak Performance: To witness an athlete playing in The Zone achieving results beyond expectations is a joy. The sight of a fellow human being performing at their optimum can be inspirational and a testament to our true potential. Such displays of skill transcend spectator loyalties to be appreciated by all for it’s magnificence.
How often have you been in The Zone?
Whilst watching an athlete in The Zone is a pleasure, to actually perform in it is sublime. Few lifetime experiences can surpass the moment when years of practise come together for a peak performance and everything seems to flow. But why do these moments remain so elusive?
A young athlete once asked her coach how would she know if she was in The Zone? Her coach replied, "Don't worry you will know".
Can you remember what you did to get there? Probably not, because I believe it is a state that occurs naturally when you learn to just get out of the way and let your body get on with it.
Athletes who describe their peak performance moments say its the ultimate experience, a sort of nirvana, a pinnacle of achievement to reach and enjoy. It is often portrayed as a mysterious, altered state where performance is effortless, trouble-free and near to perfection. Many feel they can anticipate events permitting them to take action before their opponent. The stress and anxiety of performing vanish leaving them free to function without fear of the consequences.
Another commonly reported phenomenon is the nature in which The Zone is experienced and that is, it usually occurs unlooked for. Athletes will suddenly find themselves there but as soon as they acknowledge this they lose it. Those who do feel able to enter it at will are generally elite athletes and even in these cases it is more often during training than competition.
If you want to experience performing at your peak more often you need to discover what you may be doing that is preventing that happening. I often see sports people with the commitment and determination to succeed but are unknowingly making it harder through poor movement. Yet if you don't know you are doing it, how can you stop it?
