Book Reviews

"I have just finished your book and had to give you feedback. I thought it was excellent. I don't think anyone could fail to get something out of it. It belongs on the shelf beside any book, sporting or medical/philosophical, that has the intelligence to recognise the mind-body connection in full. How much better we would all do if we applied it to the whole of our lives. It makes such perfect sense."
Wendy Goodman, competitive rower and acupuncturist, UK

"In this terrific book Roy Palmer succeeds where many have failed: namely to talk about 'the zone' coherently, elegantly and best of all practically."
Malcom Balk, author of Master The Art of Running

"This book will be a very useful addition to the tool kit of any coach or performer."
Greg Chappell, MBE, former Australian Test Cricket Captain.

"I do recommend this book very strongly as a great way to link the body and mind in your cricket training."
David Hinchliffe, ECB Cricket Coach, England.

"I've finished reading your Peak Performance book & it is truly great, I will definitely recommend it to my running club mates in Australia."
Clayton Percy, Australia.

"As a keen runner I have experienced times in The Zone but they were rare and I could never do it to order. If you have been in the Zone you will know just how satisfying it is - nothing else matters because you feel great! This book not only explains what the zone is, but more importantly for any sports person, it has some very easy techniques to use to get there. I read the whole book in two sessions as I could not put it down! Very practical, detailed, thorough and controversial in how it is critical of current fitness trends."
Tim Poulter, veteran runner, UK

"A fascinating account of how to enter The Zone through by consciously harnessing the resources and wisdom of the bodymind. This is a very useful book for all people who are committed to total health and sports performance."
Dr Mark Atkinson, Integrated Medical Doctor

"Until I read Roy Palmer's The Peak Performance Zone, I was clueless as to what athletes mean when they describe their performances as being in The Zone.

What is this unique and mystical place where their performances are exceptional and consistent and furthermore how do we go about reaching it? To answer these questions I turned to Palmer's book on peak performance and I was not disappointed in what he had to share with his readers."

.....Palmer's book will no doubt prove to be a valuable contribution in helping us reach the performance of our life at a time where there is no shortage of self-help books devoted to enhancing performance.

.....Moreover, he gets top marks as the book is an excellent in-depth and useful workbook with practical procedures to follow for the novice as well as those who are familiar with The Alexander Technique and The Zone. He has done a great job in laying out facts and details that are clear and concise with examples, images, activities and exercises that permit his readers to apply what they have learned and perhaps even serve as guides for further research.

Readers will certainly emerge better informed and perhaps even changed and that is a keen accomplishment for a book that contains 167 pages."
Norm Goldman, sports book reviewer.

Roy Palmer's work presents a unique examination of the link between thought and movement. Written with the casual and the competitive athlete in mind, Palmer demonstrates that working harder is not working smarter when it comes to training. In clear, concise language, Roy instructs us how to find The Zone of peak athletic performance purposefully rather than by haphazard accident. Based on the most current research and years of practical experience in the field with world class athletes, Palmer has created a work that presents his self-awareness techniques in a manner that is easy to read and even easier to implement.

Beginning with basic exercise theory and quickly moving past the fundamental training philosophies of old, the author captures the reader with vignettes of famous athletes and their accomplishments while in The Zone. Most exercise physiology books feel like treks through a college anatomy and physiology course, it is not often that a book comes along that is free of technical terms yet still communicates to the reader the science and theory like this book does. Palmer does an excellent job of analyzing what is The Zone and how the average athlete strives to get in it. Through observation, experimentation, and practice, Palmer's techniques will help you reach The Zone more often. His time proven techniques are a boon for those who have reached a training plateau or are plagued by poor form, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation. The Peak Performance Zone provides the reader with a method to reflect on motives, attitudes, and techniques so you can get out of whatever training slump you are currently in and move on to a more confident level of performance.

This book promotes taking responsibility for your training and developing abilities through your own deliberate efforts. Palmer believes that training is part of your personal development and as such should be approached with the same calculated efforts one puts into training for one's intellectual pursuits. Similar to cognitive skills development, athletic skills development requires both confidence and a performance consistency based on continued improvement and learning. According to Palmer, through mindful practice and attention to detail anyone can reach the Zone. Useful, interesting, and instructive, it's a practical and complete how-to manual to develop focus and self-awareness.
Shannon Evans, sports book reviewer.

"The power in this book is that it helps you see what you're doing that's holding you back and then frees you to achieve far greater results. As the title suggests, it not only looks at your physical performance but at what's going on in your mind. Roy Palmer helps you take a big leap forward, not by being better at what you already do, but by noticing what it is you could do differently. It's powerful stuff! It helps you in sport and fitness, and also in many other areas of life and work."
Angela Sherman, runner, UK

"I have been looking for something to motivate me to bring my workouts to the next level. Even though I thought I was performing to the best of my ability - I wasn't - and this book proved that. This book teaches to you think when you are working out. It allows you to be aware of every movement, which in turn, increases your level of exercise.

This book is an easy read with quick results. If you put your mind to it during your next workout - you are going to finish up by saying "Roy Palmer" really knows how to bring fitness to the next level through your mind, awareness, and fixing those bad habits we all fall into. Thank you to Roy Palmer for taking the time to write this and helping me achieve my goals."
Melissa A. Katsapetses, New Hampshire, US

Online Program Feedback

"The time I spent with Roy (program designer) in the UK last year was both fascinating and enlightening. With minimal effort he had me moving and standing comfortably and with minimal strain on my body. He was able to get me to do a full squat without effort and with no discomfort, something I hadn't done for years, if ever."
Greg Chappell, MBE, former Australian Test Cricket Captain.

"My sport leads to an increased muscular development on the dominant side and secondary twisting strains in the spine and pelvis. I have found that these lessons have enabled me to use my neuro-musculo-skeletal system more efficiently. I have fewer overuse injuries and my recovery times after hard training sessions or competitions are shorter." Jo Bowyer, Sports Osteopath, England and GB Fencer

By applying this program to my swimming, I have concentrated on maintaining good shape in the water, releasing the shoulder muscles on the recovery phase of the stroke and increasing the length of my stroke. I have paid special attention to my neck and the position of my head in the water.

This has brought about huge improvements particularly when swimming over longer distances. I am able to swim distances at a constant pace by maintaining my feel for the water rather than gritting my teeth, fighting the water and seeing my times drop off. This improves the quality of my training and most important of all, training is a lot more fun.
Jonathan Mooney, Swimmer, United Kingdom

"I found your program very useful. Your explanation is clear and insightful. What has particularly helped me so far is I've taken the effort to be more aware of how I react and this has helped to undo some lifetime habits. I've learnt how to focus in the moment and not on the end-results too much. I've learnt to 'let go' some unnecessary extra tensions that normally comes with competitions."
Hwai Tah, Squash Player, Malaysia.

"I had a great experience at the driving range the other day. Using your techniques I noticed my grip pressure increased on my downswing (trying to hit the ball) causing a slice. By being aware of this it was quite easy to correct and I could see the immediate results in a better ball flight!"
Andrew Neil, golfer, Melbourne, Australia

"Just thought I'd drop you a line to say how much your program has helped me, I really enjoyed the 'experiments'. It has helped me to see why I was suffering so much with my shoulder. The 'book keeper' technique has made a massive difference.
John Morrell, tennis player, New York, US
