Without The Effort

Yes, you did read that correctly. Posture exercises and attempts to 'do it' right can lead to further deterioration of your posture. This is because they do not address the root cause of poor posture - your habits. Most adults have developed poor habits related to sitting, standing and movement that lead to inappropriate muscular tension or weaknesses. How you sit in your car or at you desk for hours at a time will alter your body shape.

If you try to sit up straight, how long can you do it for? Do you get tired after 5 minutes or forget to think about it. Before you know it you have resorted back to your habitual sitting posture. Do exercises make a difference? Well, actually no they don't. This is because they do not change your habits. They may strengthen groups of muscles but it doesn't guarantee that you will use them any better at you desk.

So How Does It Work?

I can show you what you have been doing to cause your poor posture in the first place. Exercises cannot do this. In fact exercise will re-enforce the bad habits that got you where you are today!

Most adults use their body in a way that puts unnecessary stress in places where it is not required. This will pull you body out of shape. Until you can identify what you are doing wrong - you cannot stop doing it. Exercises designed to strengthen the 'weaker' muscles to get you standing straight just add to the tension as your overused muscles begin a tug of war with the muscles you are exercising. They will do this because you will not have learnt to let them go - it's a habit!

It is far better to learn how to 'loosen' the tight muscles pulling you out of shape and just allow you body to assume its natural relaxed upright position.

A Case Study

It is a myth that you need to exercise to improve posture. Here is a good example of a woman whose experience represents many others in her position.

Karen came to see me for lessons in The Alexander Technique because she was fed up of looking 10 years older than her real age. Her shoulders were rounded and she was terrified of developing a hump. She didn’t want to end up looking like the hunch back of Notre Dame at only 36!

In the photo above the ideal sitting posture puts far less strain on the neck, shoulders and back. The 'forced' and 'slouched' postures require more muscular effort than poised sitting. Learn how you can achieve a better balanced body by actually doing less.

The conventional view is that we need to try harder to improve posture by using exercise to strengthen the weak muscles. Or we need to sit or stand up straight by tightening something to pull ourselves upright. But consider this, if you knew what good posture was you would already have it! Therefore you cannot purely guess what is the best position for your body.
