Fitness Advice And Programs

Want to ask a question?

You say your fitness advice and programs are unique (several times), in what way are they unique?
Okay, I may have said that here and there, but I believe my programs are because they work at a deeper level than conventional methods. My system develops your fitness in a much wider sense by looking at what makes you fit beyond the accepted strength, stamina and suppleness.

I look at synchronisation (your coordination) and your ability to make decisions that will aid your performance. After all, there is no point being the fittest player on the park if you cannot read the game and act at the right moment. I ask you to think about how you move to improve your body knowledge, the picture you hold of your body that determines how you use it. If this is poor, you will not get the best results from your training and run a high risk of injury.

How would I know if my body knowledge is poor?
You have hit the nail on the head! The problem is you won’t know because you cannot compare how you use your body with someone else. It would be fascinating to ‘wear’ the body on an elite athlete for one day and see how that would feel. Sadly, virtual reality technology has yet to make that possible!

Test your body knowledge by having a go at my body awareness test.

You may be surprised at how you did. Yet all of the areas we asked you about have a huge influence on how you move and consequently the quality of your performance. So in place of training harder, with the risk of running your body into the ground, I encourage you to train smarter by focusing on specific aspects of your movement that I promise no other program will touch.

What can your programs do that others can't? That’s a bold statement to make, are you sure?
It is, but I am confident in my claims because sports science has only just begun to appreciate the influence that conditioning, concepts and habit have on performance. It will be a number of years yet before the latest research finds its way into practice in the field or fitness advice guides. One issue is that the very methods used in conventional training are the cause of the problem. Repetition of movements used in exercise that often have little in common with natural actions encourage you to use your body in a less than efficient way; result poor habits and reduced body knowledge.

Your fitness advice is based on something called The Alexander Technique, what exactly is it?
The Alexander Technique was first devised in the late 1880s and even today is still ahead of its time. Briefly, it is a remarkable system for changing how you move by making you aware of muscle habits that could be making movement far harder than it should be. For example, many people use too much effort just to get out of a chair! You can test yourself by taking my quick biomechanics assessment and see whether you put excessive stress on your body.

If you are using your body incorrectly just to do the everyday things, what happens when you are training and playing your sport? Continuous use of your body in a less than efficient way will set up a downward spiral as you then have to use more effort to move a body that is uncoordinated and using the wrong muscles.

Why not take my ultimate fitness test - its not what you expect.

The best bit of fitness advice we can give is to encourage you to Learn The Alexander Technique. It's is an excellent way to turn around this process and make you more body-aware so you are better placed to spot poor habits and change them. If it is so good why have I never heard of it?
Good question, I get asked that a lot. The Alexander Technique has been taught for over one hundred years to performing artists yet, with the exception of a few elite athletes, is unknown to most involved in sport. Those who have looked briefly at it often wrongly assume it is about improving posture or treating backache and fail to appreciate its scope and significance to athletes.

Why it is not more widely known may be due to a number of reasons. It addresses a problem few of us realise we have until we start to have lessons. There are relatively few teachers when compared to other disciplines. Teaching is mainly done on a one-to-one basis, making it a slow process to reach a sizeable proportion of the population.

The subtle approach can make it look too simplistic to address a complex problem. In common with all the best solutions, it is a simple one. If we are used to a punishing training program, the perceived physical inactivity during a lesson does not seem to be the best way to improve performance. It takes time to appreciate how the work can bring about a change. It takes time to learn how to change. A subtle, yet fundamental, shift in attitude is required before the real benefits are appreciated.

Perhaps the main reason for the Technique not being used more in sport is the attitude that ‘if it was any good, I would have heard of it’. If everyone takes this view it perpetuates the situation as no one is prepared to experiment.

How will I know if I can benefit by following your fitness advice or buying one of your programs?
That’s one question I cannot guarantee an answer, but as the saying goes, if you want a guarantee buy a washing machine! But seriously, if you have tried the tests here and found your body knowledge isn’t as good as it could be, or you are using too much effort to perform simple tasks, then you would benefit from one of my programs. I do have a 90-day money-back guarantee if you feel you have wasted your time and money, although I don't think you will. Why not take a look at my fitness advice and programs and decide for yourself.
