A Great Exercise For Lower Back Pain
Exercise for lower back pain is the most conventional approach. Perhaps a physical therapist or trainer has shown you some way to strengthen or relax your back or you have investigated the matter yourself.
Lower back pain can be a constant nagging ache or a sudden sharp shock, either will cause anxiety about your general health. If your back goes out more than you do, you have a real problem.
If you experience pain in your back please seek medical advice before starting an exercise program
Lower Back Mechanics And Movement
If you try an exercise for lower back pain it may help to strengthen your muscles but what about the rest of the time you are not exercising?
How you stand, sit, walk and run may well be a factor in your condition, If you are not currently experiencing problems you need to be sure you are not creating unnecessary stress to this area.
Try my
coordination test
to check the quality of your movement now. If your concept of how your body moves is different to its actual physiology, the quality of your movement will be compromised.
Have a look at my
Body awareness test
and check your knowledge of your body. If you do an exercise for lower back pain whilst moving incorrectly you will not benefit sufficiently to get the results you were hoping for.
An alternative way to strengthen your lower back is to use your muscles as nature intended. You will spend far more time going about your daily duties and activities than you ever will exercising. It is therefore important to move appropriately and use minimal effort in all situations.
New! Lower Back Pain Relief Guide
For many lower back pain sufferers it's not a serious problem. From my experience in my teaching practice, the majority of cases are related to how people stand, sit, walk and perform their daily activities. Many unknowingly place their backs under undue stress and cause muscle fatigue.
My new guide will show you how to take the stress off your back and help you use much less effort in all your activities - including your sport. For more information please see my Lower Back Pain Relief Guide
Try This Exercise For Lower Back Pain
Here is an example of one of my procedures.
1. Stand with you feet about hip width apart opposite a chair - see photo.
2. Release into squat and lower your stance until your hands make contact with the chair. - for advice on going into a squat see
squat exercise
also a good procedure to strengthen your lower back.
3. Moving only from you ankle joints let your head lead your body over the top of the chair and allow the weight to go through to the chair.
4. As you move forward from your ankle joints appreciate the muscles in your back responding to the changes in weight distribution. Be aware of the extra push coming up from the chair, through your arms and into your shoulders. Do not tightening your arms - let your reflexes coordinate your muscle activity.
5. Again moving from the ankles, rock back slowly so more weight is passing down to your feet. As before allow your back muscles respond without doing it yourself.
6. Repeat this forward and backward gentle rocking motion whilst being careful not to tighten your neck, shoulder of back muscles. The objective is to allow the muscles to be coordinated by your movement reflexes.
It will be beneficial to look at how you move and stand in addition to your exercise for lower back approach. Coordination is more important than strength in my view. If your strengthen your back without addressing coordination your muscles may work against you.
See my other pages on posture, poise and movement for information on re-educating your body.
Another alternative to exercise for lower back programs
I believe time is wasted doing exercises for improving your back. We spend far longer sitting, standing and walking. If you can learn to use your back correctly for these activities, you will improve your natural coordination and therefore muscle strength appropriately for your lifestyle.
Is your exercise workout working for or against you?
If you are currently undertaking an exercise for lower back pain program how do you know if it is right for you? Will it address the root cause of your condition?
Your posture and your health
Posture can be a factor in your condition, but does improving posture reduce the pain? Contrary to popular believe an exercise for lower back pain or correction of a postural defect may cause further problems. You do not need to try harder to improve your posture. I have designed this program to show you how to eliminate unnecessary muscular stress by relearning natural poise.
Re-educate yourself about your body to improve your back
An exercise for lower back conditions will not re-educate you about your body. Many people find improvements once they discover the location of their hip joints and learn to move from there to reduce stress on the lower back.
