Common Causes of a Stiff Neck

causes of a stiff neck The causes of a stiff neck aren't always obvious. Yet, once you find the root cause of your discomfort, it makes it easier to find the right course of treatment, or self-help solution.

Please use my checklist below to find the probable cause, and follow the links for suggestions on how you can get fast relief.

Note: Please seek medical advice if you have a stiff neck, high temperature and/or a rash.

Try These Questions...

1. Was there a specific event that triggered your stiff neck?

If your answer is 'NO' go to question 2.

If 'YES' was it one of the following? Please click on links for further help and advice.

  (a)  Car accident / whiplash injury
  (b)  Sports injury
  (c)  A period of intense stress or trauma

If you have not already done so, I recommend you visit your doctor or therapist for a check up. If any of the above caused your condition, my new program for a stiff neck will help you to recover and prevent further complications, even if it happened several years ago. You may still be tensing your neck and shoulder muscles as a result of the trauma. You may not be aware of this because it will have become a habit to protect your neck immediately following the event. This tension is no longer required so you will need to learn how to release it.

  (d)  A serious illness
  (e)  A viral infection

If your stiff neck appeared following an illness or infection you should consider seeking further medical attention or consulting a nutritionist. In many cases, I have seen a course of acupuncture deliver results.

2. Did your stiff neck come on..

  (a)  All of a sudden

If you have not done so yet, please see your doctor first. If no specific medical condition has been diagnosed, your condition could be the result of a damaged or pulled muscle.

Other factors that may have caused you symptoms to come on all of a sudden, are poor sleeping position - see best sleeping posture, or your pillow and mattress may need replacing. The latest memory foam technology is both affordable and very effective - read more at memory foam neck pillow and memory foam mattress.

If you have recently changed job or have a new work area, check your posture at work is not causing your pain.

Also see stiff neck remedies for more quick and easy things to try.

  (b)  Gradually got worse

This is an indication that it's most likely muscular (again, this is assuming you've ruled out a medical condition). Poor posture is a very common cause of a stiff neck and although many people groan when they hear the word 'posture', it's really not that difficult to improve it. See my easy-to-follow posture program for how to improve yours.

You could also try some of my stiff neck remedies for short-term relief, but obviously you're better finding a permanent solution.

Please go to section 3

3. Have you tried any of the following?

  (a)  Painkillers or muscle relaxants
  (b)  Manual treatment from a physical therapist, chiropractor or osteopath
  (c)  Massage
  (d)  A course of neck exercises

If you get only temporary relief from the above you are most likely causing the problem yourself with poor 'muscle' habits. In my opinion, this is often what causes a stiff neck and is usually missed. The treatment may be helping to relieve tension but as soon as you leave the treatment room or finish the exercise you will put the same conditions back into place that cause it!

This is where my techniques will really help. The reason you have found no relief with any of the above is because of your muscle habits - the way you sit, stand and move. I can show you how to identify these bad habits and remove them - some take only minutes to resolve!

The causes of your condition are many and varied, however, if you can correctly identify it, relief shouldn't be too far away!
