Is Modern Living The Common Cause of Lower Back Pain?
Cause of lower back pain:
If you have had a medical examination for your condition and no specific cause has been diagnosed this page is for you. If you have not yet seen your doctor I would recommend you do before taking any other action.

Lower back pain, even today, remains something of a mystery. Unfortunately you may have been told that it is either ‘all in your mind’ or, worse still, be suspected of faking it to get time off work. The problem is that if medical tests cannot find a probable cause it is assumed there is nothing wrong with you. Now this isn’t much use to you is it! How can you help yourself if your doctor cannot give you an accurate diagnosis?
Nearly 80% of us will experience lower back pain at some time in our life, but in only a minority of cases will this be a symptom of something serious. For the rest of us it will either go away after a few weeks and periodically return or, in the worse case scenario, continue to cause pain and discomfort for the rest of our lives.
Are You The Cause of Your Lower Back Pain?
For a condition that can lead to so much misery it is surprising that medical science has yet to come up with either a way to diagnose and classify it and, more importantly, a reliable treatment. I believe this is because medicine does not yet recognize what could be a major factor in back pain. This factor, in my opinion, is that most adults, due to stress and the pressures of modern living, have lost ‘the art of natural movement’.
Not sure what I mean by this? Try my movement analysis test, it’s based on a movement you perform many times a day and may just surprise you.
How often are you stuck behind a desk, the wheel of a car or clued to the couch in front of the TV?
What is this doing to your back? I'm sure you know that slumping is not good for your back but neither is sitting up too straight!
How often do you try to correct a slump by tightening your lower back? We go from one extreme to the other and miss out the best sitting position somewhere in the middle.
If you suffer sitting at your computer you might want to try my program, Are You Sitting Comfortably?, it will help you learn how to take the stress out of sitting.
Can Exercise Help?
We know we should be more active but when we do exercise or play a sport are we still capable of free and efficient movement? In my role as an Alexander Technique teacher I see far too many people who have caused more problems with exercise.
Has your doctor advised exercise? Yes it is true that activity as opposed to bed rest is better for your back, but how do you know if you are moving correctly? If posture and the way we move are a cause of lower back pain, are we not making matter worse by using our bodies more vigorously?
I would suggest that before you start on an exercise program to help your lower back you should assess how you stand, sit, walk and run. If you can learn to reduce the unnecessary stress many of us place on our lower backs this can go a long way to resolving the problem for many sufferers.
How do we start this process? There are a number of options and one of the best in my view (speaking from personal experience) is learning The Alexander Technique, a remarkable system for postural re-education.
If you cannot find a teacher near you then you might like to sign up for my FREE online Body Awareness Course. Obviously this is not the same as having a lesson from a teacher directly but you will find some very useful procedures for releasing the common stresses and strains you unknowingly will place on your back.
Is Your Posture The Cause of Lower Back Pain?
Your posture can have a huge impact on your health. A poor body shape will put undue stress on parts of your body as you struggle to keep an upright position against gravity.
My program, 'How To Improve Your Posture Without Exercise' will show you how to achieve an effortless posture by re-learning how to use your body efficiently.
