How To Find An Alexander Technique Teacher in The United Kingdom

alexander technique

The Alexander Technique has been taught in The United Kingdom since F.M. Alexander first came to London in 1903 so you could say that makes the UK the home of this fascinating method.

There are two main societies of Alexander Technique teachers in the UK, STAT and the PAAT. Members of these societies will have completed a three year, full time training course and will use either MSTAT or PAAT after their names.

What To Consider When Choosing an
Alexander Technique Teacher

To learn The Alexander Technique represents a commitment on your behalf to at least 12 lessons, invariably on a weekly basis, so if you can find a teacher nearby this could make it easier. However proximity should not be the only consideration. For many, the changes experienced during a course of lessons can be quite profound so you will need to feel comfortable with your teacher and feel they understand your needs.

Alexander teachers are fully aware of this and many will offer you a trial lesson or two before you decide to commit to further sessions. You should also think about going to more than one teacher initially if you have the luxury of having a choice in your area. This will give you the opportunity to find a teacher who you feel you can comfortably work with.

Alexander Technique teachers may also practice other therapies, be musicians or sports people but this will not make them any better at teaching the technique than other teachers without this experience. Musicians may think that a teacher with a musical background may be a better option for them but this is not necessarily the case.

A good teacher will be able to give you an experience of the fundamentals of the technique regardless of their background.

Is It Possible To Learn Without A Teacher?

Well you could argue that F.M. Alexander, its originator, obviously did! But it took him many years and failed attempts to master his technique. Using a teacher will allow you to learn far quicker and avoid the pitfalls of trying to learn from a book. However, having said this I do know of people who have done very well from using a book before deciding to come for lessons.

alexander technique book I have written an introduction to The Alexander Technique which is now available on ebook to download. Called Fit for Life it will give you a taster of what to expect when you go for a lesson.

It contains a number of standard procedures to help you build a better picture of your own body to reduce the usual stresses and strains you probably experience in your daily activities.
