How Affiliate Programs Can Earn
You An Extra Income

Affiliate programs are becoming increasingly popular on the web. If you are looking to earn an income from an internet business then affiliations are the way to go if you do not have goods to sell yourself, or even if you do for that matter.

The number of companies offering affiliations for small businesses or individuals running websites is increasing almost on a daily basis. There are also more and more affiliate websites that will manage your accounts and produce detailed reports on your dealings.

So What Is An Affiliate Program?

An affiliate program is where you form a link with a supplier of goods related to your website. You place either text or banner ads on your site that links into their site. If your visitors click on that link, visit the site and then buy one of their products, you will earn either a commission (usually 5%-10%) or a flat rate for the lead, result equals extra income for you with almost negligible overheads.

For example, your website may be a guide to health and beauty and have a page about vitamins. You could set up an affiliate program with an online health food store selling supplements and have a link on your vitamins page to that supplier. You could do the same with beauty products, recommend books and send them to Amazon or even recommend health spas and get a commission for every visitor who books a stay with them.

When you apply to become an affiliate, the supplier will usually check that your website is relevant to their business and is reputable, i.e., does not promote violence etc. Once accepted you will be given access to their affiliates page where you can choose between text links or banners (picture ads).

These links will contain your unique affiliate code so every time a visitor clicks through they will know where they came from.

Most suppliers will have a period following the initial visit where you will still get a commission even if they don't buy on the first click - this can vary from 30 right up to 90 days.

It is worth looking around at the businesses who offer affiliate programs as your reputation will take a dive if you send customers to a poor trader just because they offer the best percentage commission. So how do you know if the company you are interested in setting up an affiliate program is a good one to deal with. You can always search on their name and find others who have experience or check out one of the many directories that allow their customers to rate them.

I have used the Affiliate Programs Directory but there are many more appearing each day. I will check the company on a number of directories or chat rooms and forums for people trading on the web before setting up a program. Yahoo also rates many sites and is also a good guide to their reputation.

If you are based in the UK then I would recommend AffiliateFuture as they have a good choice of businesses in all categories.

If you are looking to cater for the US market then at present Commission Junction is one of the best established. They can be found at www.cj.com
