Fighting Back! Better, Stronger, Faster.
July 09, 2007
Hi

Welcome to July’s edition of The eZone.

What do you do when something goes wrong? It may be an injury, your tennis serve goes to pieces or your confidence leaves the building, something somewhere has stopped working and action is required. Whilst it can be a set back, this situation gives you a unique opportunity to assess your approach and technique. With the right attitude you could soon be back on course, stronger, more knowledgeable and better placed to progress further.

This month we’ll look at how you can recover from a setback.

1. Don’t Let History Repeat Itself

Whether you are a professional athlete, weekend warrior or enjoy a trip down the gym, there is nothing quite so frustrating as a sports injury. And worse still, a recurring sports injury that refuses to go away.

Whilst some are unavoidable the majority can be prevented with intelligent training and an attention to your form and technique. If you sustain an injury then it is very important that you visit a qualified therapist for treatment and advice. Complete rest is usually pretty high up on the list yet many are too impatient to get back to training, return early and get injured again. You should use this period to find out how it happened and how you can prevent it happening again.

The majority of cases I see are related to poor movement and technique. Correct these and you are well on your way to recover and preventing it happening again.

2. Losing It!

It would be naive to believe that during a lifetime of sporting activity you will not experience disappointment or frustration at some stage. After all, there would be no highs without the lows. I have worked with a tennis player who practically ‘forgot’ how to serve, a number of golfers who suddenly can’t sink a short putt or a swimmer who inexplicably lost 10 seconds off her personal best.

In the examples above we were able to find tiny, almost imperceptible actions had unknowingly crept into their technique. This action might be a fixing of breath, a tightening of the jaw muscles or even a twitch in the lower back. In each case these were enough to upset the flow of their technique and once they were able to recognise this, and prevent it, their form returned. In addition to a return to form they had become more knowledgeable about their technique.

The trick is to develop your skills of observation and focus so you will know why you are good at something and become immediately aware of any changes likely to impede it. The procedures in my peak performance training book ‘Zone Mind, Zone Body,’ can help you to develop this ability – see my special offer for this month!

3. Sports Rehab Revisited

It’s all very well for your doctor or therapist to tell you to ‘put your feet up’ following an injury. Sports people usually make the worst patients as we tend to feel like a caged animal if not active. But ‘putting your feet up’ it doesn’t have to involve doing nothing. Whether you are returning from injury or in the middle of a bad run of form there is plenty for you to do – but it doesn’t require the sort of effort we would assume.

We have been bought up to believe that we need to try hard to succeed. If things aren’t going so well then we need to try even harder – right? Well, this is the moment you need to sit down and think about your approach. If you are in difficult place then it’s your current approach that got you there! Maybe if this changes you will see different results.

How do we do this? Please click here to find out the approach I use with my clients.
