The eZone: Does Your Back Go Out More Often Than You Do?
October 30, 2006
Dear

Have you ever experienced the misery of back pain? Most adults will at some time in their life suffer up to a week of pain and discomfort. For the unfortunate few it can be life sentence to misery. But why do so many people suffer from it and why is conventional treatment so ineffective?

This month’s eZone looks at one possible cause and how you can take steps to prevent back pain or get relief if you are already a sufferer.

If you are currently experiencing back problems I would advise you to seek medical assistance to rule out a serious condition before taking further action.

In this issue

1.   A possible cause of back pain

2.   What’s the best treatment?

3.   Is there an alternative?

4.   Running and back pain

5.   New Running Program

6.   * * New book release * *

1. A possible cause of back pain

Of all the back conditions you can suffer from lower back pain is the most common. It is rarely serious if not related to a specific medical problem but it can be a source of irritation and distraction. There are a number of theories to why it is so widespread including the popular ‘it’s because we are on two legs’. Personally I do not subscribe to this view because surely the gradual physiological process of adapting to our current upright position has sufficiently prepared our body for the demands placed upon it.
My own view is that the pressures of modern living combined with our sedate lifestyles has robbed many of us of our innate skills for balance and movement. Therefore it is not just a matter of treating the back because the back is not the root of the problem.

2. What is the best treatment?

Not too long ago bed rest was the preferred treatment. Things have moved on as studies proved this didn’t offer a long-term solution. Today doctors will recommend that you try to stay active and take exercise backed up with painkillers or muscle relaxants. However, whilst some will benefit many others will not. This is due to one huge big assumption made when offering advice on how to cope with back pain and this is ‘to correct a wrong you just need to try and do it right.’ For example, you will know that slumping is not good for your back so all you have to do is sit up straight. Right? Wrong! I have been teaching The Alexander Technique to thousands of back pain suffers for the last ten years and I have yet to see one person who can ‘sit up straight’ without adding more tension to their back and consequently make it worse.

So what is the best way to treat a bad back? Find out here……

3. Is there an alternative?

Due to the perceived ineffectiveness of conventional medicine to treat non-specific back pain, many people now look to other means. But where do you start? There doesn’t seem to be a week go by without someone claiming how a new or alternative therapy cured them of their misery.

What are the alternatives and what should you consider before seeking help? Read more here….

4. Running and back pain

Many runners also suffer from back pain often due to a combination of poor technique and inadequate shoes that do not absorb the shock from the road sufficiently. One other cause that is not quite so obvious is the concept of running itself. For example, I see many runners who when attempting to increase speed unknowingly ‘push’ forward using their lower back.
